Shades of Purple

 Welcome to Treadlestitches!

Purple scrap sewing is happening today!

I just love it when I open the sewing room door and immediately see the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month.

The 2.5 in. strips are running low, I'll have to cut some more.  Does that  count as using up scraps?  Or am I making more scraps?

Purple is one of my favorite colors, but I sometimes have a little trouble putting different shades of purple together.  For example, above is our scraggly little lilac bush, whose flowers are a lighter shade.

The star points on the right are more lilac or even lavender.  The star points on the left are a deep purple (not to be confused with the British rock band of the same name).

So do all shades of purple go together?  What do you think?  Maybe I should just relax about this.

Who could relax around here with all this noise?  School is out for Little Buddy, and we're all enjoying the summer together.  These guys like to bang on pots and pans after breakfast.  I wonder why we keep buying toys.

You can tell it's summer in Wisconsin when the Farmers Markets open up.  It's early days yet, but I did get some spinach, asparagus, and a pint of honey.

Look what I found lurking around the back porch!

Maybe that's what scared off this American goldfinch, caught on camera as she was flying away.

On the agenda for today is this little project, left over from last month.  I've even got it all organized.

I laid it out last night when I should have been getting ready for bed.  The pattern is Fun and Games, by Jo Kramer and Kelli Hanken.  Many of you probably know Jo from her excellent blog, Jo's Country Junction.

The pattern is in American Patchwork and Quilting magazine, Issue #164, and the issue is dated 6/5/2020, exactly a year ago today.  Jo's version used yellow solid where I used red.  I also changed the size a bit.

I can't wait to sew this up.  It's been on the back burner for a while.

Summer is going well here so far, and I hope it is for you, too.

Have a lovely week!

Cheers,

Sylvia@Treadlestitches

  1. Looks like it' all fun and games at your house, Sylvia! I hear you on the PURPLE issue. (When I think too much) I struggle with the great shade debate, too!

    1. Fun and games is right, that's us all the time. Maybe I'll feel better about all the purple shades when they're sewn into a top.

  2. You have lots of pretty purples to play with, Sylvia! I wonder sometimes about the different shades going together or not, but then I sew them together anyway. I love the Fun and Games quilt, and the fun and games with pots and pans, too. Your guys are so cute!

    1. Thanks, Diann! Yep, that's the right attitude, sew them together anyway! These purples need to play nicely with each other.

  3. Purple and blue are the colors I have the most trouble matching. I have less trouble "letting go" in a scrappy quilt. I love your Fun and Games quilt. The red really makes all of the scraps play well together, just like the Buddies.

    1. Thanks, KatieQ! You're right, I'm making scrap quilts after all, I should just put all the purples in. Everybody into the pool!

  4. I think all shades of purple go together!

Oh, the kids look like they are having so much fun. We used to keep a cupboard in the kitchen just with kitchen items the kids could play with. Those were the days!

    1. Hi, Cathy! I have one of those cupboards, too. It's one I can't put a child lock on anyway. And you're right, these purples are pretty friendly with each other, they can work together.

  5. A quilt shop employee once told me that if you include enough pieces of varying shades of a particular color they all would play nicely together. She said 7 was the minimum number. I was skeptical but it has worked over the years. So if you have at least 7 shades of purple they will be fine together.

The bird in your photo is an American Goldfinch, not a chickadee.

    1. Seven shades--I think I have at least that many! And thanks for letting me know about the goldfinch. They are such pretty birds. There were two of them on the porch that morning, but I could only snap one of them before they were gone.

    1. Thanks, Alycia! My little buddy creates a Jurassic park in the living room at least once a week. I think it looks more realistic outside. Now that the snow is gone, of course!

  8. I have an entire garden section that is only shades of purple. It is one of my favorite areas. In fact my sewing room is painted three shades of purple. So I think you know my vote :)

Thanks for linking up with Oh Scrap! I wish their were mini dinos in my gardens.
